The Town of Boone is a university community in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The Town seeks an experienced, progressive and energetic Public Works Director. This community of 19,658 population has a Public Works Department with 72 positions and a department budget of $14,662,238. The position will function as a member of the management team reporting to the Town Manager in a Council-Manager form of government.
Responsibilities:
The Director is responsible for a department encompassing street maintenance, facilities maintenance, stormwater management, fleet maintenance, and traffic control. Specific functions include street re-surfacing , sidewalk construction , right of way mowing, building maintenance, parks and greenway maintenance , street signs and markings, yard waste collection, curb side collection of appliances and furniture , and residential garbage and recycling contract management. Planning, organizing and directing all public water and wastewater treatment, distribution and collection programs and activities. Initiates and monitors construction projects with department staff and contractors, involving treatment plants, distribution and collection lines and related facilities. The role also participates with Council committees on transportation, open space, bike ways, and greenways planning. Work involves management of staff, budget, and resources for efficient, effective and customer focused service.
Requirements:
Graduation from a four year college or university with a major in construction management, engineering, public administration, business or related field and considerable experience of a progressively responsible nature public works management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Coursework or experience with engineering principles a plus. The Town seeks a visionary with a strong track record in customer service excellence, problem-solving and teamwork; staff development; and high level of professional ethics and integrity. Working in collaboration with state, regional and other local transportation agencies, Town management, and other Town departments in this Council-Manager form of government is also essential, as well as exceptional leadership and management skills.
Compensation:
Hiring range begins at $87,361, but salary is negotiable dependent upon experience and qualifications. The Town offers a competitive benefits package.
