Sanitation & Recycling

RecycleThe Town of Boone provides weekly curbside sanitation and recycling services to town residents in order to take good care of our natural beauty and reduce landfill waste. Both services are provided through GDS, Inc., a private contractor.

The recycling program is on a volunteer basis. The town provides free residential recycling bins, which are available at:

Residential collection for sanitation and recycling is on the same day with no exceptions.

RESIDENTIAL RECYCLING COLLECTION:
Brown, green and clear glass, steel and aluminum cans, newspapers (with inserts), magazines, catalogs, telephone directories, plastic bottles and all plastics #1 and #2. All colors accepted. Please check the symbol, which is printed on or near the bottom of most plastic bottles for soft drinks, liquor, juice, mineral water and sports drinks.

OFFICE RECYCLING COLLECTION:
White and colored paper, newspapers (with inserts), magazines, telephone directories, brochures, junk mail, file folders, manila envelopes, adding machine tape, time cards, multi-part forms (without carbon), legal pads, message pads, continuous-run computer paper, aluminum beverage cans, plastic bottles including all plastics #1 and #2. All colors accepted.

APARTMENT RECYCLING COLLECTION:
Brown, green and clear glass, steel and aluminum cans, newspapers (with inserts), magazines, catalogs and telephone directories. Apartment owners and/or managers may contact GDS, Inc. at (828) 264-3689 to participate in this program.

COMMERCIAL RECYCLING COLLECTION:
This recycling collection program is designed for restaurants.

The North Carolina General Assembly’s House Bill 1518 that became effective January 1, 2008 requires holders of certain ABC permits to recycle all recyclable containers of all beverages sold at retail on the premises which includes glass, aluminum cans and plastic. The Town of Boone provides 18 gallon recycling bins to the restaurants to sort glass, aluminum cans and plastic inside the building. Recyclable items collected on the commercial recycling route include brown, green and clear glass as well as aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Restaurants are to be collected on the commercial recycling route. Contact a local collector to participate.

OLD CORRUGATED CARDBOARD COLLECTION (OCC):
GDS, Inc. runs a weekly scheduled route for old corrugated cardboard for businesses. Contact a local collector.

HOLIDAYS:
GDS, Inc. is closed on Christmas Day. All other holidays during the year GDS, Inc. services sanitation and recycling as scheduled. The Christmas holiday schedule is printed in the local newspapers and is announced on the local radio stations during the week prior to the holiday.

INCLEMENT WEATHER:
In the event of ice and snow, GDS, Inc. will run the regular sanitation and recycling routes if the streets are cleared, but may be on a delayed basis.


PREPARATION AND PARTICIPATION


GARBAGE:

The town provides pick up service of other items on a call-in basis. (See Facilities Maintenance Department).

RECYCLING:

ITEMS PUT IN BINS THAT ARE NOT RECYCLABLE WILL BE LEFT IN YOUR RECYCLING BIN

IF YOU ARE PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO MOVE YOUR GARBAGE CONTAINER OR RECYCLING BIN TO AND FROM THE CURB, GDS, INC. WILL HELP. CALL GDS, INC. AT (828) 264-3689 TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS.

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE BANNED FROM NORTH CAROLINA LANDFILLS:

The GDS, Inc. facility located at 300 Brookhollow Road has containers for all items taken on the recycling routes which includes newspapers, catalogs, magazines, telephone directories, junk mail, brown, green and clear glass, steel and aluminum cans, plastic bottles including all plastics #1 and #2. All colors accepted. GDS, Inc. also has a container for old corrugated cardboard (OCC). Anyone is welcome to use the recycling containers at the GDS facility.

The public is invited to recycle catalogs, magazines and telephone directories at the Public Works Department at 321 East King Street. There are four carts outside and to the right of the building available for your convenience. The Public is also invited to recycle corrugated cardboard in the tan corrugated cardboard recycling container located inside the gate in back of parking lot to left of the building.

Compost bins are available at no charge to town residents for back yard composting. You may pick up a compost bin at the Public Works Department at 321 East King Street.
